There are more and more news articles about women raped or abused while serving time in our nation’s prisons and jails. It has to stop.
Each woman who fights back can make a big impact by exposing the horrible conditions and institutional complacency that allow for this kind of abuse.
As a pretrial detainee in a jail or an inmate a state or federal correctional facility, you may have temporarily lost your right to leave but you absolutely have not given up your right to say no to sex. But when a guard or group of guards targets you, there can be little or nothing you can do. It’s a horrible situation. You can’t escape. And reporting the misconduct to prison authorities could be risky or pointless. It may seem like you don’t have many options, but if you can contact me, either by a discreet letter or through a friend or family member, I will find a way to help.
It may be that after a transfer or release is the safest time to take action against a guard abuser, but if waiting isn’t an option there are still things we can do to protect your safety, including seeking court intervention immediately.
What you can expect
If you choose to reach out, on your own behalf or on behalf of a loved one who is incarcerated, here’s what you can expect from me:
- Phone Consultation – Within days or even hours, you’ll talk to me on the phone about your situation
- Investigation – Based on what you tell me, I’ll conduct some preliminary research about your harasser and interview any important witnesses you identify. Very often, your harasser will already have done the same thing to someone else and those prior victims can be important witnesses in your case
- Your Decision – Once I’ve got enough information, I’ll explain your options in detail. You can ask every question you have and it’ll be up to you to decide whether to move forward with a lawsuit
Please keep in mind: I only get paid if I win money for you. So if you decide not to pursue a case or if there is no recovery, then you owe nothing. I don’t charge you out of pocket for the consultion or investigation.
