Unfortunately, there are industries that illegally underpay certain kinds of workers. These industries do the math. They realize that they can save more money by underpaying their workers, even though some of those workers will sue them and win. Pizza is one of those industries.
For years, large pizza chains have underpaid their delivery drivers. State and federal laws require all employers to pay their employees a minimum wage after expenses. But some companies, like many pizza chains, do not reimburse their delivery drivers the full cost of driving-related expenses like gas, repairs, insurance, and maintenance. As a result, many delivery drivers are making under minimum wage once all these expenses are factored in. Those delivery drivers are entitled to compensation to bring them back up to minimum wage.
